Putting established musicians in the same room and expecting it to work out great isn’t always realistic, but these groups managed to parlay their notoriety into supergroup success.

“Supergroup” isn’t the most beloved term out there, but it’s the universal word for a band which is comprised of musicians who’ve already found fame in other acts. Supergroups have been around for decades, sometimes even surpassing the members’ former projects in legendary status.

The ultimate supergroup has got to be Cream. Forming from members of the Yardbirds and The Graham Bond Organisation, the power trio would go on to blow their old bands away, creating some of rock’s most influential music. Other bands like Bad Company and Blind Faith would go on to define supergroup success in the ‘60s and ‘70s.

In modern times, bands like A Perfect Circle and Audioslave took members from their era’s most iconic acts and created entirely new entities.
