Unfortunately, rock and metal shows don’t always end peacefully. In this Loud List, you’ll see 10 examples of when gigs went horribly wrong.

There are two bands you’ll see in multiple entries on this list: Metallica and Guns N’ Roses. The sheer popularity of the acts and mania from fans resulted in some of music’s most infamous riots. At a 1992 co-headlining concert in Montreal, Metallica’s James Hetfield suffered severe burns in a pyrotechnic accident, cutting the band's set short. After the crowd waited over two hours for Guns N’ Roses to take the stage, GN'R's show also ended sooner than expected due to bad sound and Axl Rose’s vocal issues. Thousands of pissed off fans tore Stade Olympique apart, but thankfully no serious injuries were sustained in the riot.

In 2000, Rage Against the Machine planned to stage a peaceful protest of music during that year’s Democratic National Convention in Los Angeles. Rage performed a free show as an act of defiance against America’s two-party system, but police turned violent against concertgoers, dispersing the crowd using tear gas, pepper spray and rubber bullets. Police received serious backlash from the public in response to how they handled the situation.

On the other end of the spectrum, we’ve got an Atari Teenage Riot performance in their hometown of Berlin, Germany. Using a makeshift float, ATR took to the streets in protest of the German government’s contemplation of getting involved in the Kosovo War. A gigantic riot broke out and Atari Teenage Riot were subsequently arrested by police.
