The mosh pit may seem like a violent place — and it is — but it does have a certain code and set of unwritten rules to abide by. Everyone knows if someone falls, you race to pick them back up. Additionally, everyone knows not to start a fight and that contact is generally not target specific and any rises in aggression are typically dealt with swiftly by others in the pit or around it. If you don't follow these rules and try to pick a fight, you might find yourself on the business end of a spin kick to the face like the aging man in the video above.

Mississippi based deathcore act VÆN have seen this happen not once, but twice at their shows. As seen above, the man is wandering around, angsty and targeting one person in the pit specifically. After a series of unsuccessful attempts to deal any sort of reasonable damage, the man falls flat on the ground after getting roundhouse kicked in the head by someone mostly off camera.

Rock Feed reached out to vocalist Troy Greene, who gave some background on the situation, explaining, "He stood in the way of the band for every band and was hitting people and grabbing them, not fully understanding the concept of hardcore dancing. A few people kinda gave him warning bumps and knocked him around. We all spoke to him warning of the dangers of standing in the middle of the pit trying to hit [people], the staff warned him, bands and the venue owner."

VÆN also posted on Facebook regarding the incident, detailing this is the second time an older man has interrupted the pit and suffered consequences. In closing, the band stated, "He was completely okay after this happened, he was bleeding pretty badly, but recovered in the restroom and came right back out and was trying to mess with kids dancing in the pit again right after. He was warned to stay out of the moshing area numerous times by bands, crowd members and staff at the venue."

In late 2014, Slipknot's Chris Fehn discussed how he has seen an increase in bullying in mosh pits, telling Music Review, “I think, especially in America, moshing has turned into a form of bullying. The big guy stands in the middle and just trucks any small kid that comes near him. They don’t mosh properly anymore. It sucks because that’s not what it’s about. Those guys need to be kicked out. A proper mosh pit is a great way to be as a group and dance, and just do your thing.”
