Another Animal, featuring current and former members of Godsmack along with Ugly Kid Joe singer Whitfield Crane (who also had a blink-and-you'll-miss-it stint in Life of Agony in the mid-90s), have a pretty potent bark and bite. The band's new single, 'Fall of Rome,' is a grungey, acidic hard rock number that begins with a booming bass thud and some nasty guitar riffery.

Crane is a gifted vocalist -- always has been -- and here, he alternates between gritty growls and a soaring, higher register voice that isn't too polished or melodic. It keeps things tough.

The song's opening lyrical salvo is "I can smell the stench upon you," so Crane and company clearly are not masking their intentions or their vibe. 'Fall of Rome' is pissed off, mid-to-fast tempo rock.

While it's true that Another Animal consists of the musicians that comprise Godsmack sans Sully Erna, this song does not sound like Godsmack sans Sully Erna. The guitar work is slightly edgier and less radio friendly than that of Godsmack, and Crane's vocals are stylistically different than Erna, so Another Animal are a wholly different band.

Another Animal bare their teeth with "Fall of Rome,' which is one of those songs you want to crank when you are working out. It'll help adrenaline surge through your veins.
