Facebook, Anthrax

Being a heavy metal drummer is a very physically demanding job. There’s a lot of wear and tear on the body, and at age 50,  drummer  has been doing this for a while, and he’s got the bandages to prove it.In a message on Anthrax’s Facebook page, Benante posted the picture (seen left) along with the following message:

“Surgeon fixed my hand, nothing broken, just carpel tunnel…behind my Anthrax drum kit soon, 9/13 in San Bernardino.”

Benante is talking about the Battle of San Bernardino show with Iron Maiden, Megadeth, Testament, Sabaton and Overkill.

Anthrax are currently in Europe playing festivals with fill-in drummer Jon Dette, who also subbed for Benante on some dates last fall and this spring.

In a recent Guitar Center interview, Benante talked about his musical beginnings. “My mom, dad and my sisters saw my ability and acted on it. Across the street from us was a family with three girls who would play at churches and little tiny functions. They had a keyboard, guitar and a drum set. When the oldest one, who played the drums, went off to college, my dad offered to buy the kit.”

He also talked about how he ended up in Anthrax. “A friend of mine knew the guys in Queens who were in this band called Anthrax. He put us together. The two guys came over and we got along. Then it just took off. I left art school to go on a tour in a van and I never looked back.”
