The Stage is just the beginning! Avenged Sevenfold have shown a knack for keeping fans on their toes with their approach to releasing music and they’re doing it again by making The Stage an evolving body of work. The band has revealed their plan to continue to release new material beyond the initial street date of The Stage album and they’re starting today (June 9) with an intriguing cover of the Mexican folk song “Malaguena Salerosa.”

“We’ve said all along that we want The Stage to be a different and exciting listening experience,” says vocalist M. Shadows. “For us, the idea of turning an album into a living piece of art and adding new installations is really intriguing. It expands the journey.”

As for the song itself, you can hear it in the player above and see behind-the-scenes footage in the studio with producer Joe Barresi and horn players Sarah Bauza and Rachel Tate Hermann. It is also streaming via multiple platforms here.

Guitarist Synyster Gates explains, “I’ve always loved that song. There have been a few interesting interpretations over the years, including Chingon’s version from the Kill Bill Volume 2 soundtrack. That’s a great example of how a timeless song can be made relevant with a creative modern take. The structure, arrangement and incredible vocal work of their rendition was inspiring.”

In our own upcoming interview with guitarist Zacky Vengeance, he explained, “The song itself is a beautiful song with an incredible melody. It lends itself well to a really awesome rock/metal arrangement, even though it’s a traditional Spanish folk song. And us growing up in Southern California and being so heavily influenced by the culture, it just has a Western vibe to it.”

He continues, “We had a discussion of whether we should cover it and have Matt translate it and sing it in English and I was the biggest advocate saying you absolutely have to sing it in Spanish and it’s going to go a long way because it’s the way the song was meant to be performed. It’s fun and it’s going to bring a chuckle to some fans and make some people raise their eyebrows or roll their eyes. And for some people, in typical Avenged Sevenfold fashion, it’ll cause them to be in an uproar cause we did something so off the wall, but that’s what makes it great and that’s why we had so much fun doing it.

Shadows adds, “We wanted to do the song justice and that meant singing in its original language. It was difficult, but I worked on it for weeks and had a Spanish-speaking friend come over daily to go over pronunciation. I also brought him to the studio to produce the vocals. It was important to me to get it right.”

“Malaguena Salerosa” is just the first song fans can look for from the band, with more expected to follow. In our upcoming interview, Vengeance revealed that the idea was for the songs to eventually be revealed as part of The Stage via streaming services. “This is purely for the fans, and if you’ve ever checked out the album on any of the streaming sites, this would be like you would come back to the album and realize, wow, this wasn’t there the last time I checked. We just wanted to record an album with no boundaries, and doing this really means there’s no limit to the opportunities. You can add live tracks, you can add commentary, you can add new songs, cover songs, anything that fits,” says the guitarist.

For those who like what they hear, “Malaguena Salerosa” is also available to listen to or download at these locations. Meanwhile, the band’s album The Stage is also available here. Look for Avenged Sevenfold on tour with Metallica this summer in support of The Stage. Dates can be found here. And stay tuned for our full interview with Avenged Sevenfold’s Zacky Vengeance coming later today.
