It may seem controversial placing Between the Buried and Me above bands such as Iron Maiden and Slayer, but what BTBAM accomplished with 'Colors' is possibly the greatest conceptual achievement of 2000s metal.

Released in 2007 and clocking in at just under 65 minutes, 'Colors' is one album-length song, broken up into eight tracks. Having made waves with 'Alaska' in 2005, fans were taken on an unexpected, full-blown acid trip as 'Colors' ventured into dark carnivals, blues, polka, a full-blown hoedown and much, much more. The balance achieved in 'Colors' is a landmark in modern metal, and deserves the upmost respect as an artistic experiment.
