Billy Corgan: ‘I’m Not Pissing on Deep Purple, But I’ll Piss on Radiohead’

As the June 19 release date approaches for Smashing Pumpkins‘ latest opus ‘Oceania,’ frontman Billy Corgan is making the media rounds. Never afraid to say exactly what is on his mind or ruffle feathers, in a recent interview with Antiquiet about the new album, Corgan addressed a variety of topics.

When asked about the risks taken with ‘Oceania,‘ Corgan said he is tired of being told who is he is by others. “From ’89 on I’ve had people tell me who I am. And they pick my personality as if it’s a one or two-dimensional thing, and I’m more like a tetrahedron. I can’t think of any people outside of Weird Al Yankovic who have both embraced and pissed on Rock more than I have. Obviously there’s a level of reverence, but there’s also a level of intelligence to even know what to piss on. ‘Cause I’m not pissing on Rainbow. I’m not pissing on Deep Purple. But I’ll piss on f–kin’ Radiohead, because of all this pomposity. This value system that says Jonny Greenwood is more valuable than Ritchie Blackmore. Not in the world I grew up in, buddy. Not in the world I grew up in.”

‘Oceania,’ which is currently streaming online for free, is part of the continuing 44 song project ‘Teargarden by Kaleidyscope.’ In addition to new material, there are some upcoming reissues Smashing Pumpkins fans will be able to sink their teeth into. The reissue of 1995‘s ‘Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness’ will include up to a whopping 75 unreleased tracks/alternative mixes, and possibly a concert DVD, which would make for a six-disc package.

There is also an expanded ‘Aeroplane Flies High’ reissue in the works and live releases planned for the Smashing Pumpkins Record Club (SPRC).
