It was a tight battle, but Soundgarden's 'Black Hole Sun' has emerged to earn its first Classic Cage Match victory over Nine Inch Nails' 'Closer.' The standout track off of Soundgarden's stellar 'Superunknown' album is a wicked rocker giving Chris Cornell's voice a chance to shine while some sinister licks are laid down under his voice. The track received just shy of 55 percent of the final tally to advance, but 1994 was a big year for hard rock and the hits just keep on coming.
First off, congrats are in order for Iron Maiden's 'Phantom of the Opera,' which just concluded its Classic Cage Match Hall of Fame run by defeating four other tracks from the year 1980 over the past month. With the Iron Maiden tune retired to the Hall of Fame, that makes room for two new competitors in the Classic Cage Match.

The song, which came from the band's self-titled debut disc while Paul Di'Anno was still their frontman, bested the Ronnie James Dio-led Black Sabbath and their 1980 single 'Heaven and Hell.'
