The first decade of the 2000s is still pretty fresh in everyone's minds as we were bombarded by a wealth of different stylings in heavy metal. Nu-metal and alternative metal dominated the earlier part of the decade, metalcore in the mid half, and an array of genres in the later half. It was a decade where simplicity and technicality both reached respective heights with bands ranging from Godsmack to Necrophagist. Regardless of their differences, these bands managed to churn out some timeless riffs.
While the 1990s may not be held in as high regard as the '80s when it comes to metal's prominence, a look deeper into the decade proves that it produced some stellar music, not to mention some incredibly memorable riffs.
We've already put out our Best of 2013 lists, but as an added extra, we asked some of rock and metal's biggest bands to throw in their own two cents. In this post, you'll see several Best Albums and Best Songs lists from some of your favorite artists, and you may be surprised by their choices.
The 1980s: the glory days of metal. What can we say about a decade of heavy music that hasn't already been said? Let's talk about the almighty riff.
Dear Rock and Roll Hall of Fame,
For the second year in a row, you nominated, but ultimately denied induction to Deep Purple. Fans of the legendary hard rock / heavy metal act were disappointed by the snub last year, but as Deep Purple were once again passed over for the 2014 ceremony, the Internet has blown up with serious vitriol against your Hall of Fame.
The 1970s was an interesting time for heavy metal. Black Sabbath helped birth the genre at the very beginning of the decade, and a host of other legendary bands followed suit. Along with Black Sabbath were bands like Judas Priest and several proto-metal acts who are now regarded as classic rock, but were deemed some of the heaviest in their day. It is for this reason that bands like Led Zeppelin, Blue Oyster Cult, Deep Purple, Van Halen and others will be found in the list below. While their music might not be pure metal, the riffs included here are metal through and through.
The Pretty Reckless frontwoman Taylor Momsen has led a life rarely out of the spotlight. She began her career at the age of two, working ever since to become a beloved actress and musician. Momsen dropped by our studio recently for to discuss the Pretty Reckless' upcoming album, 'Going to Hell,' but first, we've got a new episode of 'Wikipedia: Fact or Fiction?' to share with you now.
Insane Clown Posse have some … well … "unique" fans. But honestly, very few acts can claim such a passionate and dedicated fan base. Whether at an ICP show or the 'Gathering of the Juggalos,' the Insane Clown Posse family comes out in droves, dressed as clowns much like their idols Violent J and Shaggy 2 Dope. Unsurprisingly, this phenomenon produces a lot of "fails," which we present to you right now!

We were shocked by some, disgusted by others, inspired by many and even reduced to tears at times. There were many headlines in the worlds of rock and metal in 2013, but these are the stories that made us stop in our tracks.
