After reports earlier in the day of a possible suicide, TMZ and Billboard are now reporting that the Wayne County Medical Examiner's Office has released the cause of death of Soundgarden singer Chris Cornell as being "suicide by hanging." The Associated Press also confirmed the cause of death in a tweet of their own.

Cornell's body was discovered in a Detroit hotel room after the band's concert at the Fox Theater. It was reported earlier in the day that the singer's wife Vicky became concerned when she couldn't reach him and the singer's body was then discovered on the bathroom floor when hotel security was sent to check on him.

The possible suicide news surprised many, as the singer reportedly spoke about playing the band's next show during their Detroit performance Wednesday night (May 17). In addition, sources who spoke with Cornell's wife told TMZ that she expressed that the singer was not in a suicidal state and had shown no signs of depression.

A full autopsy report, including toxicology results, has not yet been completed. Chris Cornell was 52.
