Dave Grohl continues to keep pretty tightlipped about all things surrounding the documentary he’s working on about the legendary Sound City recording studio and companion soundtrack, but lucky for us, producer Butch Vig is talking. And a new tidbit that Vig has revealed is that Grohl jammed with 'Jessie's Girl' hit-maker Rick Springfield as part of the project.

While he’s not divulging all the details, Vig did recently talk to Billboard about the film. According to the producer, the impetus for the film came after Grohl purchased the vintage Neve console from the now-defunct studio. After that, he wanted to tell the story behind the hallowed halls of the musical landmark where everyone from Fleetwood Mac to Nirvana recorded their albums.

"He's probably interviewed 150 or 200 people so far,” said Vig. “Now we've been working on musical collaborations to be a part of the soundtrack for the film." And that’s where things take a turn for the bizarre. Over the past few months we’ve heard about collaborations with Slipknot/Stone Sour singer Corey Taylor, Stephen Pearcy and Warren DeMartini of Ratt, and now Vig reports that Rick Springfield came in to play with Grohl and Josh Homme from Queens of the Stone Age. All of these off-the-wall collaborations are completely unexpected and can only hint at the whole-lot-of-awesomeness the project aims to deliver when it’s finally done.

As for the interviews, Vig said that the stories about the studio run the gamut."Some of the people's experiences there were great, and some people's experiences, like anything, were negative or there's a black cloud or whatever," explained Vig. "We're not trying to paint a shiny picture, like everything is always perfect when you go into a recording studio, and I think that is what is sort of fascinating to see how all these people opened up."

According to Vig, Grohl is hoping to have the movie and soundtrack mixed in the fall to prepare for a January or February release in 2013. Until then, feel free to give Dave a call on his new number crafted for the project 1.855-SND-CITY or check out the short trailer here.
