Death vs. Venom – Metal Madness 2017, Round 1

Combat / Neat
Combat / Neat

This Devil Horn Region matchup features two genre innovators with Death‘s Scream Bloody Gore taking on Venom‘s Welcome to Hell in Round 1 of our March Metal Madness tournament to determine the Best Debut Metal Album of All Time!

Death leader Chuck Schuldiner is often credited as death metal’s godfather thanks to the band’s Scream Bloody Gore debut. Taking thrash in a more primitive and ugly direction, ‘Evil Chuck’ focused on haunting leads and ripping rhythm work as the foundation for his throat-shredding screams which conveyed messages of death and violence.

Somehow throwing more dirt on Motorhead’s gritty, rumbling sound, Venom played the style harder and faster, flexing their Satanic muscles in the process. Welcome to Hell served as the original first wave of black metal album as the trio embraced their loose grip on instrumentation, using it as an aural weapon to muck up the metal genre for good.

So which album will move on to Round 2 of March Metal Madness 2017? Vote below for either Death’s Scream Bloody Gore or Venom’s Welcome to Hell as the Best Debut Metal Album of all time in the poll below!

(Voting in Round 1 will end on Friday, March 17, at 10AM ET. Fans are able to vote once per hour, so keep coming back to make sure your favorite debut album advances to the next round!)
