Deftones have made quick work of their next record. The band, who enjoyed a boost with their ‘Diamond Eyes’ album, recently returned to the studio and has finished writing and recording their still-untitled follow-up.

Singer Chino Moreno tells EW.com that having producer Nick Raskulinecz around really helped speed forward the process. He explains, “We adopted a work ethic that was really productive on the last record. We said we were going to work eight hours a day, and since we had those hours, everybody in there was super focused. Before that we had been working up in Sacramento, and the vibe was everybody would come in and hang out and we would work when we got around to it. We had to get more efficient.”

When asked about the still-untitled release, Moreno said it would once again play to their strengths. He explained, “Obviously we’re an aggressive band – not the heaviest, but there’s a lot of attack. But there’s also this lush beauty that flows within everything we do, and that’s my favorite part of the band. To me, it’s the epitome of what the Deftones do.”

They also have one final thing in store, which is to record cover songs, something that’s been a tradition since their 1995 disc, ‘Adrenaline.’ Moreno says they’ve been messing around with five different Elvis Presley songs, and are contemplating tracks from Earth, Wind & Fire as well. The covers may or may not end up as b-sides.

At present, the band has entered the mixing phase for their next record, and Moreno says it’s expected to arrive on Oct. 9. To gear up for the run, the group will play dates with System of a Down in August.
