Legendary death metal act Deicide have released a new video for the track ‘Conviction’ from their 2011 album, ‘To Hell With God.’ The claymation video depicts Jesus rising out of a dumpster in New York City only to be chased and sent to the depths of hell by Deicide frontman Glen Benton.

The video for ‘Conviction,’ which was premiered today (Feb. 24) by SMNnews, is a violent and disturbing depiction of a modern-day crucifixion of Jesus Christ. Formed in clay, Deicide’s Glen Benton (who was infamous for repeatedly burning an inverted cross into his forehead) nails the hands of Jesus to the doors of a church before stopping the ascension of Christ and casting him into hell.

SMNnews spoke with Deicide drummer Steve Asheim on the eve of the ‘Conviction’ video premiere. When asked about the meaning of the song and the video, Asheim replied, “Yeah they’re both pretty cool, the song and video. I guess it’s about being convicted because of your convictions. Eh, see there, that double meaning…pretty clever.”

Ashiem was also asked about working with the video’s director and editor David Brodsky, who has created videos for bands such as Suicide Silence, As I Lay Dying and GWAR. “Well sometimes the best thing to do with an artist is just turn ‘em loose and let ‘em do their thing. And he certainly did with this video, so hats off to him.”

Deicide are set to embark on a North American tour with Jungle Rot, Abigail Williams and Lecherous Nocturne. Check out the dates for the trek here.
