Gene Hoglan has been in a LOT of bands. Let’s just get this out of the way: Dark Angel, Strapping Young Lad, Zimmer’s Hole, Fear Factory, Testament, Dethklok, Death, Devin Townsend, and he even filled in live with Opeth, among others. He is able to adapt his playing style to a diverse range of bands, but earned his stripes with Dark Angel. Their album ‘Time Does Not Heal’ proudly boasts containing 246 riffs. That’s an impressive feat for a drummer to anchor. Gene Hoglan is a rock behind the kit.

Gojira are a rhythmic titan who’s chugging all hinges around the playing of Mario Duplantier. The band often switches between clean passages and maddening heaviness to offer the best contrast in their music. Due to the complexity of the rhythms, Duplantier can’t simply sit back and pound away at his kit in standard fashion. His drumming is worth the listen alone, switching between timings and crafting ear-catching fills that give Gojira’s music such depth.
