Katrina Parker Gives Not-So-Smashing Rendition of Pumpkins’ ‘Tonight, Tonight’ on ‘The Voice’

Billy Corgan‘s dream of becoming an ‘American Idol’ judge has yet to materialize, but the Smashing Pumpkins singer took one small step towards becoming a reality TV star on tonight’s (April 9) episode of ‘The Voice’ when Katrina Parker turned in a rendition of ‘Tonight, Tonight,’ the Pumpkins smash off their massively successful 1995 album, ‘Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness.’

Coach Adam Levine has compared Parker to Adele, which gives things a strange twist — Adele isn’t the first person that comes to mind when the name Smashing Pumpkins is thrown around. The comparison rang true during her performance, however, as Parker took the dark, soaring tune and turned it into a more straight-forward ballad.

Parker has a strong voice but lacks some confidence onstage, which seemed to mirror the song’s lyrics perfectly — “Believe / Believe in me” – giving a prescient quality to her performance that likely won over some fans at home. That said, she seemed to falter a bit towards the end of tune, turning in a few shaky notes that put a big question mark at the end of an otherwise decent rendition.

How did the coaches react? Not so well. Christina Aguilera insisted she wanted to hear Parker “rock out more,” while Cee Lo questioned her approach, saying that “the song should not ever be a show tune, it should remain cathartic.” Coach Adam, of couse, backed up his own singer, but it may not be enough. Will the ‘Tonight, Tonight’ singer live to sing another night? Come back tomorrow to find out!
