A 30-plus minute medley of songs and bizarre sounds put together by the late Kurt Cobain has surfaced. The strange compilation features excerpts of songs from artists like Simon & Garfunkel, The Beatles, Van Halen, Kiss, Iron Maiden, Queensyche, Frank Zappa, The Velvet Underground, Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix and a lot more.

According to Dangerous Minds, Cobain assembled the ‘Montage of Heck’ medley back in 1988 using a four-track cassette recorder. The strange medley features strange sounds from toilets flushing to nature sounds and includes manipulated radio sounds, spoken word excerpts, backwards audio messages and even some snippets of early Nirvana demos. Listen to the weird medley above, and see a list of all the tracks at this location.

The compilations is quite a challenge to listen to in its entirety and gives some insight into the mind of a 21-year old Kurt Cobain, who must have had quite a lot of time on his hand to tackle such an ambitious project. Remember this was recorded long before songs were a click away so Cobain had to actually get hard copies of these songs and sounds to put into his four-track recorder.

Back in April, Nirvana were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. R.E.M. frontman Michael Stipe delivered the band’s induction speech, while Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic were on hand to accept the honor along with Courtney Love.  The surviving members performed with Joan Jett and other female vocalists.

In other Nirvana news, Courtney Love recently said she hopes to begin a Kurt Cobain biopic next year. Meanwhile, Dave Grohl recently admitted that the Foo Fighter’s new song ‘Subterranean’ was inspired by Nirvana’s demise.
