Marilyn Manson – Antichrist Superstar is No. 1, for sure. While there are more extreme bands with more extreme music and artworks, Antichrist Superstar was THE controversial album.

Antichrist Superstar by Marilyn Manson #1

There are a few points of criteria that goes into making an album controversial. 1) Who the fuck was offended and does it span across different cultures, demographics, and/or is seen throughout the mainstream world view? 2) Does the album contradict what we call today as known beliefs or systems? 3) Has the album forced some form of change in society?

Because of these my list would for surely include:

Black Sabbath – Black Sabbath – first album with open lyrics of witchcraft interests and “satanic” themes! Religious people through a fit when it became known.
Ozzy Osbourne – Diary of a Madman – Ozzy did it again here with upside crosses on the album cover.
Wasp – Animal I fuck like a beast – The PMRC and Al Gore’s wife found this album cover and lyrics to be threatening to the lively hoods of teenagers. It was the album that forced the government to pass the law to have warning labels all over shit!
Slayer – Reign in Blood – From the very first track “Angel of Death” this album started whirlwinds all over the globe…and for good reason! Because the lyrical content and cover imagery was extremely direct to their points the ignorance of the masses could not ignore metal anymore. It was this album that dubbed Slayer as the darkest band but that was only due to the furthering ignorance of the masses. For example: Angel of Death was not a pro-holocaust song..it was merely telling the horrific stories the Jews went through at those times. “Reign in Blood” and “Altar of Sacrifice” confronted the religious sec in the world and caused world wide panic that “Satan” was really in control of the world and was speaking through metal music….fucking idiots! This album caused more significance in the world for the metal movement than any of Metallica’s albums combined!
Motley Crue – Shout at the Devil – From a band I hardly call a metal band and a band I call Moldy Crotch rather than their real name! This album was first spot lighted because of the introduction to the Shout at the devil song and the remake of Helter Skelter – which was one of the songs that Charles Manson played and used to brainwash those around him to commit murder. Other than that Moldy Crotch is a pile of shit band!
Cannibal Corpse – All their artwork and only their covers illustrations were ever remarketed. So this would probably be more for the person that does their covers than the bands albums…but hilarious that some will be mentioning them in here…Fuck that!

Anyway those mentioned above, other than Moldy Crotch’s Shout album, would make up my top four in whatever order. They changed shit the most and I would also add Venom – Black Metal in there somewhere as well.

On another note- Marilyn Manson – Antichrist Superstar was not a controversial album numb nuts. He is a controversial figure because he followed the shitty path of shock bands behind kiss (who ultimately sucks), and Guns n’ Roses, or aka Nuns n’ posers – appetite album was not controversial they were. Seriously fuck sticks do your research! I’m out!!!
