The reviews have been mostly positive, with fans salivating over the heaviness and speed of the chaotic new Metallica song "Hardwired." The track made its live debut over the weekend in Minneapolis, but a look at the current tour schedule shows that not many dates are booked for the remainder of the year. In a new interview with Rolling Stone, drummer Lars Ulrich reveals that the band will expand their touring in 2017.

"We did 180 shows on the Death Magnetic tour in two-week periods over three years," says Ulrich. "That's what works for us. We're going to start pretty much full-on touring in January and are looking to figure out what we're doing in North America, but there will definitely be some pretty extensive touring in America."

Though Metallica have remained a presence on the road in recent years, they haven't booked a full American arena tour since 2009. "It's time to come back and do some proper penetration of America," says Ulrich, who adds that the band is currently deciding how many new songs they'll work into their sets. "We're itching to play them," the drummer says. "Right now, every day when we get into the Tuning Room we're just playing the new songs. Then we're like, 'Wait, we gotta get out there and play 'Master of Puppets.'"

Meanwhile, those who are crushing on Metallica's new "Hardwired" single can get a closer look at how the track once described as "Riff Charge" came to be in a new behind-the-scenes video that can be seen above. "The mission statement is to write an opening song for this next record that is super thrashy and fast and aggro," says Ulrich in the video, as he and James Hetfield work out the beats and tempo of the track. Hetfield even discusses a drum pattern he thinks might work well in the song and his joy at hearing part of the song ends up being a cool unintentional extra as we hear him laugh. Hetfield also reveals how the album's title came to be. Watch the video in full above.

And, if you like what you've heard so far, Metallica's Hardwired ... To Self-Destruct album will arrive Nov. 18 via Blackened Recordings.
