Nirvana's history was brief, but their legacy is the stuff of legend and this year the band is being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Ahead of their Thursday night induction, surviving Nirvana members Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic dropped by 'The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon' to share some stories from their past.

Novoselic took the lead, telling Fallon of the Rock Hall induction, "It's all so bittersweet too because our friend Kurt [Cobain] has been gone for 20 years. So [this] is a good way to remember him." The bassist, whose relationship with Cobain dated back to high school, recalled, "He was this weird kid and I was a weird kid and we thought the world was weird, so we gravitated toward each other and we loved punk rock music and everybody else hated punk rock music."

As the topic turned to the band's meteoric rise to fame after the release of 'Nevermind,' Grohl interjected, "Even when we had a gold record, we still had a van with a U-Haul trailer, so it happened really quickly."

The drummer also shared a story about the band's often destructive performances, while Novoselic joked that by destroying their instruments, they didn't have to play an encore. Grohl told Fallon, "We were on tour in Chicago and Kurt had been chopping at my drums all tour and my drums had holes in them. They sounded like crap cause there were holes in them and I kept asking our tour manager, 'Can I please get a new drumset?' This is before we were playing big places and we were in clubs, and he says, 'Let's wait another week.' And he'd chop more holes in it, and it was, 'Wait another week.'"

The drummer says he eventually found a solution, adding, "I went to Kurt and said, 'Hey man, at the end of the gig we have to smash my drum kit to splinters, because I need a good one.' But we spent half an hour breaking those drums. We told the audience, 'You can go home, it's all good.' And then the next day, the drum place was closed."

In addition to the interview, Grohl and Novoselic also had a chance to introduce the night's music guest -- their 'Sound City' cohort Stevie Nicks performing with "Tom Petty." It should be noted though that it was actually Fallon posing as Petty. See both interview segments above and below as well as the Nicks / Petty performance below.
