Red Hot Chili Peppers Enjoy Getaway to ‘Garden’ Party in New York City [Photos]

Following the June 2016 release of their eleventh studio album and seventh overall full-length effort through Warner Bros. dubbed The Getaway, Los Angeles’ undisputed kings of rock, Red Hot Chili Peppers, announced a colossal tour of North America for 2017. The immense outing kicked off last month in Texas and is presently confirmed to hit over 50 major American markets, with a schedule set to run until late June of this year.

The multiple Grammy Award winners and 2012 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees Red Hot Chili Peppers are currently planted in New York City for three sold-out performances at the iconic Madison Square Garden, which started last night, Wednesday (Feb. 15). The legendary rockers kicked off their dynamic mini NYC residency with a four-minute opening jam courtesy of bassist Flea, guitarist Josh Klinghoffer and drummer Chad Smith.

The giant LED screens stationed behind the band and a large automated lighting sculpture suspended above the stage helped to kick the show into high gear, with singer Anthony Kiedis exploding onto the stage below for the first of the band’s many hits — their 2002 chart-topper, “Can’t Stop.” Fans lucky enough to snag a ticket to catch the Peppers in the Big Apple roared and cheered as the band ushered in the night’s third track in the form of the lead-off song from 2006’s Stadium Arcadium and Grammy Best Rock Song of that year, “Dani California.”

The hits kept on coming as the modern rock anthem “The Zephyr Song” blasted through the famed venue’s PA system, causing even lead singer Kiedis (who was wearing a soft cast boot on his left leg from an injury sustained on their current run of live dates) to erupt onstage and lose complete control thanks to the band’s sensational grooves. The guys immediately followed with the first single off of their latest opus The Getaway, the critically acclaimed “Dark Necessities.” Other fresh tracks from the new LP like “Go Robot,” “Sick Love,” “The Getaway” and “Goodbye Angels” also made it into the band’s high-caliber, 17-song set list.

As the sea of hanging LED lights intermingled and created a visual harmony of their own, RHCP spent the rest of the night dishing out fan-favorites likes “Right on Time,” “Californication,” the Iggy and The Stooges cover “Search and Destroy,” “Suck My Kiss,” “Under the Bridge” (which Flea dedicated to the deceased Alan Vega from electropunk duo Suicide) and “By the Way.”

Flea presented the band’s encore with his signature walking handstand and the group ended their night with arguably their most popular song “Give It Away.” While thanking the crowd for their presence, Kiedis proclaimed, “Life is very strange, these moments are good. Until we meet again.” Flea added, “We are so lucky to be here. We are grateful to be here,” as elated fans hollered and affirmed their last-minute shouts.

NOLA-based trombone / trumpet sensation Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue opened the evening, delivering funk to the masses in New York City.

The Chili Peppers will once again take over MSG this Friday (Feb. 17) and Saturday (Feb. 18). For all upcoming North American tour dates, head here.
