Sex Pistols bassist Sid Vicious was to stand trial for murdering his girlfriend, Nancy Spungen, but never lived to see the trial. After being released on bail from jail in 1979, a small gathering attended a party to celebrate at his New York apartment. The rocker's mother, a registered drug addict herself, had some heroin delivered to the apartment. Vicious, who had been clean while behind bars, overdosed on Feb. 2, 1979.

Vicious' new girlfriend reportedly left their bed when the rocker asked for heroin and told his mother what had happened. Before her own death in 1996, Vicious' mother Anne admitted in an interview to administering the fatal dose, but her "confession" was later brought into question.
