Oooh! We've already got two of the genres biggest names squaring off early on! Jason Newsted has been a key member of some major metal bands over the years while David Ellefson earned his stripes as Megadeth's most prominent bassist.
Aww snap! We've got a Metallica vs. Metallica battle to present to you in our very first round. The late Cliff Burton is currently taking on Napalm Death's Shane Embury, but Jason Newsted and Rob Trujillo stand face to face ready for combat.
On August 25, 1988, Metallica released their fourth studio album and the first since the death of bassist Cliff Burton. '...And Justice for All' featured Jason Newsted on bass and some of the most complex 'Tallica tunes to date. Twenty-five years later, songs like 'One' and 'Harvester of Sorrow' still prove to be fan-favorites at live shows.
Gigantour 2013 is now in the books, and during the final show last night (Aug. 11) in Toronto, Dave Mustaine and Jason Newsted jammed the Metallica classic 'Phantom Lord' during Megadeth's set (watch fan-shot video above).
Metalheads of all ages turned out for Gigantour at New York's Hammerstein Ballroom on Aug. 7 presumably with their hearing somewhat intact. With sets by Megadeth, Black Label Society and Newsted, it’s safe to say that ears were ringing and muscles were aching days after the show.
It may be hard to believe, but Jason Newsted has now been a former member of Metallica almost as long as he was a member of the legendary band. After departing in 2001, he explored other musical projects, including Voivod. He also embarked on an art career while recovering from shoulder surgery.
Jason Newsted recently stopped by Loudwire headquarters to talk about his new band, Newsted. The former Metallica bassist discussed his decision to release an EP first and how that led to the band's upcoming album, 'Heavy Metal Music.' He also talked about the addition of Staind guitarist Mike Mushok into the band, as well as the writing process in Newsted.
As the release date for their debut full-length draws near, Newsted have revealed the lyric video for the song 'Above All' (watch above). It's from their album 'Heavy Metal Music,' which will be unleashed Aug. 6.
