Tool are not a band. Tool is an entity - one multifunctional being seamlessly controlling a brilliant mass of sound. Made up of vocalist Maynard James Keenan, guitarist Adam Jones, bassist Justin Chancellor, drummer Danny Carey, masterful lights, fog and breathtaking animations, Tool delivered a powerful experience last night to its legions of fans in New Jersey.
It had been well over a year since Tool took the stage to perform but the absence from live playing is over. The band kicked off its brief winter run over the weekend in Reno, Nev., performing a set list filled to the brim with classics and fan favorites.
The hard rock scene's most beloved enigmatic rockers -that'd be Tool-- are gearing up to hit the road next month on a North American trek. The band has already added some new dates to their itinerary, much of which sold out at a rapid clip. Since Tool going on tour is not exactly a common occurrence, fan anticipation is at an all time high.
Less than a week after stumping fans and journalists with a cryptic Web site statement that was erroneously deciphered to mean Tool were back in the studio working on a new album, news has surfaced that the psychedelic, prog-metal masters will play their first U.S. shows in almost 18 months.
For nearly 20 years, Tool have developed a well-deserved reputation for being secretive, cryptic, even evasive. Judging from a November newsletter the band released yesterday morning, the progressive, psychedelic and emotive hard rockers remain as frustratingly elusive as ever.
