Some critics have accused black metal of becoming a parody of itself in recent years, and certain musicians at the forefront of the movement, including Mayhem bassist Jørn Stubberud (aka Necrobutcher), haven't done much to prove the genre is still dangerous, vibrant and viable.

Recently, Necrobutcher agreed to have an exorcism administered to him by radio and television Evangelist Bob Larson, who has previously locked horns with members of Slayer, Deicide and Acheron. The exorcism was filmed by the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation and aired in a 30-minute program on Nov. 1.

Larson went into the exorcism with the hopes of freeing the demons that lurk within Necrobutcher and saving his soul. Necrobutcher said he entered into the project to demonstrate the hypocrisy of the Christian church and the ineffectiveness of any such procedure. The circus show can be viewed below.

Mayhem are currently touring the U.S. with Abigail Williams. Mayhem made international headlines in 1991 when their singer committed suicide and again in 1993 when the bassist of Burzum, Count Grischnakh murdered the guitarist and songwriter for Mayhem, Euronymous. Grishnakh was sentenced to 21 years in prison for the murder and for taking parts in four church burnings in Norway. He served nearly 16 years of his sentence before being released on parole. Burzum's latest album, 'Ordo Ad Chao' came out in 2007. Burzum released 'Fallen' in March 2011.
