Love will always be the catalyst for incredible music, whether it embraces the highs of finding the right person or the lows of losing them. These aren’t just heartbreak songs, though, they go even further into a territory we call “anti-love.”

It doesn’t get any more black and white than Queensryche’s “I Don’t Believe in Love.” From the iconic concept album Operation: Mindcrime, “I Don’t Believe in Love” was one of the band’s biggest hits, also allowing for the album’s back half to be incredibly strong.

HIM wrote plenty of love songs throughout their career, almost solely focusing on the topic. Though many cuts broach the topic of heartache, “The Funeral of Hearts” seems to go against HIM’s favorite topic altogether. Ville Valo sings, “Love’s the funeral of hearts / An an ode for cruelty” and “Love is a gun separating me from you,” painting love as a caustic and poisonous emotion.

No metal band did love (or anti-love) songs quite like Type O Negative. Peter Steele’s iconic voice and crushing lyrics have withstood the test of time better than most, with a perfect example being the long form “Unsuccessfully Coping with the Natural Beauty of Infidelity.” The song is broken down into three parts, with the most painful being its final movement, “I Know You’re Fucking Someone Else.” Love can be bleak, and Steele certainly knew how to weave that reality into song.
