David Lee Roth Injured as Van Halen Rock 8-Song Concert for ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live’ Gig
David Lee Roth injured himself during the first take of Van Halen’s live performance for Jimmy Kimmel Live on Monday night. The band was on the show to celebrate today’s released of their new album Toyko Dome Live in Concert with an eight song mini concert on Hollywood Boulevard. During the first take of their opening number, “Panama”, Roth cut his nose on his microphone. He exited the stage, got patched up and returned, so the band could rock out for all eight songs.
In the video above, you can watch what happened right after Roth exits stage right to deal with his injury. The rest of the band are playing on stage by themselves for over a minute, while the crowd waits for Roth to come back. When Roth does reappear he says, “Alright, alright, I f—ked my nose up on the microphone here so I’m going to wear the Band-Aid and we’re going to start the whole thing over for ya, and we’re going to give you a little extra for your patience here.”
The first part of the eight song mini show aired on Kimmel last night, showing Van Halen performing “Panama,” (the second, injury-free take) “Runnin’ With The Devil” and a bit of “Dance The Night Away.” Besides those three tracks, Van Halen played “Hot For Teacher,” “Eruption,” “You Really Got Me,” “Unchained” and “Ain’t Talkin’ ‘Bout Love.” The second part of the mini concert will air tonight (Mar. 31) on the show. Check out their performances of "Panama" and "Runnin' With The Devil" below. Roth's nose injury makes a lot of sense when you see how he kicks off the "Panama" performance below by twirling his microphone stand like a baton.
Last night marked the first time the group has performed on U.S. TV with Roth since he rejoined the group in 2007. Fans will get to see a lot more of Van Halen soon, as the band has announced a massive 2015 North American tour. They’ll kick things off on July 5 in Seattle and make their way around the U.S. and Canada through Oct. 2, when they play in Los Angeles at the Hollywood Bowl.
