It was a moment we'd all been awaiting, but not as much as Against Me!'s Tom Gabel. Friday night (May 25), the singer took to the stage as Laura Jane Grace. It was the first time the singer had performed live with his band since coming out as a transgender in the recent weeks.

"I was worried that some people expected me to come out looking like Little Bo Peep or something," Grace tells Rolling Stone. The magazine described Grace's appearance simply as, "decked out in a loose-fitting black tank top, tight black jeans and black eye shadow" - all standard fare for an Against Me! show.

All the same qualities fans have grown to love over the years were still ever-present as the band played their usual high-octane 40-minute set at Humphreys Concerts by the Bay in San Diego. The show was the first of many in a month-long U.S. tour, opening up for the Cult.

Against Me! played six new songs in their set, including 'Transgender Dysphoria Blues,' which will be the title track of their forthcoming album currently in the works. While she never addressed the personal change directly with the crowd, the hardcore fans knew exactly what was happening and embraced her brave decision whole-heartedly, especially during their 2007 hit 'The Ocean.' Following the lines 'If I could have chosen / I would have been born a woman' – fans applauded and cheered, vocalizing their support.

Grace has just started her journey and is only two weeks deep into her hormone replacement therapy that redistributes her body's muscle mass.

Look for the band's new album in the coming months.
