Let’s take some time to honor the women who changed the landscape of rock and roll! It’s the 10 Greatest Frontwomen in Rock History!

Rock was a boys club up until the late '60s, when women like Janis Joplin and Jefferson Airplane’s Grace Slick began outshining the majority of their male contemporaries. Both women will go down as two of the greatest singers ever, but it was Janis Joplin’s wildly soulful approach that made even Joe Cocker blush. Joplin would pass away before she released her arguable masterpiece, Pearl, in 1971.

What could have been a throwaway girl group became a rock institution when Kim Fowley put together The Runaways in the '70s. The band only lasted a few years, but it birthed two of the most important solo careers in the annals of rock. Joan Jett would go on to write timeless anthems, eventually resulting in a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction, while Lita Ford established herself not just as an iconic frontwomen, but perhaps the greatest female shredder of all time.

We managed to include some of modern rock’s most prominent frontwomen on our Loud List. Perhaps no 21st-century rock musician has achieved the level of success and rabid fanfare as Evanescence’s Amy Lee. She engraved her name into rock’s monolith with Evanescence’s debut album in 2003 and despite taking a recent break from music, fan support remains at a frenzy for Lee.
