3 Doors Down and ZZ Top Cancel Alabama Show Due to Stage Concerns

Ticketholders hoping to see 3 Doors Down and ZZ Top in Atmore, Ala., on Saturday (June 9) were left disappointed — but probably safer — when the bands pulled out of the gig, citing concerns with “numerous safety issues concerning the structural integrity of the stage.”

3 Doors Down made the announcement via their website, saying there was a “significant risk of a potential stage collapse” at Atmore’s Wind Creek Casino — and given the spate of stage collapses we’ve seen over the last year, it’s hard to argue with their decision.

Cheap Trick dealt with a collapse last July, when their set at the Ottawa Bluesfest was cut short by a freak storm that took out the stage and sent multiple attendees to the hospital. The next month, high winds toppled a stage at the Indiana State Fair, causing multiple deaths and prompting a lawsuit against headlining act Sugarland, who were getting ready to begin their set when the tragedy occurred. (In the wake of the collapse, 3 Doors Down were one of the bands that issued public condolences via Twitter.)

A mere four days after the Indiana State Fair, yet another stage collapsed — this time in Belgium, at the Pukkelpop Festival, where a heavy storm wiped out multiple structures, caused several deaths, and sent at least 70 people to the hospital with injuries.

Needless to say, the decision by 3 Doors Down and ZZ Top to pull the plug on Saturday’s performance seems like a wise one; nobody wants to see concert injuries or deaths — and given the deaths at last weekend’s RockNess festival, we’ve seen more than enough of it lately anyway.
