The times, they were a changin' in 1997. The hard rock scene was starting to transition away from the last vestiges of the grunge era, with a more straightforward rock and what we would soon come to know as nu metal looming.

It was also an eclectic year for rock music, with pop/punk coming to the forefront and leaving its indelible mark on the year. While many of the big bands that had dominated the '90s were absent from the release schedule in 1997, there were several other bands who saw their star rise to new heights, establishing their place in the rock scene for years to come.
