Did anyone realize on Sept. 24, 1991 that history was being made? Two new albums -- Red Hot Chili Peppers' Blood Sugar Sex Magik and Nirvana's Nevermind -- arrived in stores on the same day and the rock music world was about to get flipped on its head. With Blood Sugar Sex Magik turning 25 this year, we asked drummer Chad Smith about the silver anniversary and he also volunteered his thoughts on touring with Nirvana and seeing the response to their album, as well.

"The band was in a very exciting place creatively at that time," says Smith in the video above. "I remember that it was the first time that Rick Rubin had worked with us and we recorded at this house in Hollywood, so we weren't in a regular studio. We lived in the house. And we had a bunch of songs and John [Frusciante] especially was coming into his own as a songwriter and feeling very comfortable in the band."

Smith says that Blood Sugar Sex Magik was probably his favorite album to make and adds, "It was fun, man. I think back and it went really quickly. We did it in maybe two months and Anthony [Kiedis] was singing more and the songs were becoming more melodic and it was the first time thinking, listening to the playback, it was the first time thinking that the band's natural organic sound and energy had been captured on tape."

The drummer reflects in amazement at the fact that their album, and another classic release -- Nirvana's Nevermind -- came out the same day. "They were just so amazing and just an incredible band," says Smith of Nirvana. "We did get to tour together at the end of '91, right after Christmas we did a West Coast tour together. Pearl Jam was the opening band, Nirvana and then the Chili Peppers. We played up and down the West Coast and I just remember being in the Cow Palace in San Francisco on New Year's Eve and watching Nirvana launch into 'Teen Spirit' and the crowd and the place, it was just like … amazing, just like nothing I've ever felt before. It was exciting and … I can't explain the feeling, it was incredible. We are seeing something really amazing."
