Dave Grohl Says TV Singing Competitions Are ‘Not What Music’s About’
During a press event for TV Critics Association, Grohl told journalists that he's not exactly a fan of the music competition series that have popped up to launch the careers of several artists over the last decade-plus. Grohl explained, "I don't want my kid to think that the only way you can be a musician is to stand in line at a song contest audition, and then wind up having a bazillionaire tell you you're not a good singer. Don't get me started. To me, that's not what music's about."
This isn't the first time Grohl has spoken out on shows such as 'American Idol' and 'The Voice.' In 2013, he dedicated a Facebook post to the matter, stating, "It's destroying the next generation of musicians! Musicians should go to a yard sale and buy an old f---ing drum set and get in their garage and just suck. And get their friends to come in and they'll suck, too. And then they'll f---ing start playing and they'll have the best time they've ever had in their lives and then all of a sudden they'll becoming Nirvana. Because that's exactly what happened with Nirvana."
He went on to add, "That can happen again! You don't need a f---ing computer or the Internet or 'The Voice' or 'American Idol.'"
Grohl continues to carry the torch for real musician-created and recorded music, dedicating the band's next album to exploring some of America's great music cities like Nashville, New Orleans, Chicago and Austin, learning their history and then recording a song in some classic studios and venues. The musical road trip is the basis for the upcoming 'Sonic Highways' series, which is expected to air this fall on HBO coinciding with the release of the band's next album.
In other Dave Grohl news, the rocker and his Foo Fighters bandmate Pat Smear served as part of the backing band for Kristeen Young as she made her late night TV debut on 'The Late Late Show With Craig Ferguson' Wednesday night (July 16).
