In the debut episode of our newest series, The Needle & the Damage Done, we’ve got legendary drummer Dave Lombardo telling us the stories behind his tattoos.

We caught up with Lombardo at the 2018 Inkcarceration Music and Tattoo Festival, which was held at the The Ohio State Reformatory. The prison is most famous as the filming location for The Shawshank Redemption, and also set the scene for Godsmack’s “Awake” music video. From inside OSR lockup, Lombardo took us on a tour of his skin.

Throughout his time with acts like Slayer, Suicidal Tendencies, the Misfits, Dead Cross and many others, Lombardo has been called a “machine” by fans, so he mechanized his right arm. The piece was created by Carlos Aguilar, who’s done plenty of work on Gary Holt in the past.

Aiming to cover an old tribal tattoo from the ‘90s, Lombardo got Aguilar to tattoo him backstage at the Big 4 concert in Sweden, resulting in Lombardo missing the all-star jam of Diamond Head's “Am I Evil?” which was popularized by Metallica. “I decided not to do it ‘cause I wanted to get this tattoo done,” Lombardo says. “I went ahead and skipped that. Everybody was asking where I was. ‘Oh, he’s getting a tattoo.’ It’s like, ‘What?!’”

Lombardo also showed us his first tattoo, which he received in his late-20s. Check that out in the video above and get ready for the 2019 Inkcarceration Festival on July 12-14. Tickets go on sale soon and the 2019 lineup will be revealed in January.
