Legendary drummer Dave Lombardo seems to have the Midas Touch, turning any project he’s involved in to gold. He formed the hardcore crust punk outfit Dead Cross in November of 2015 with shows booked before the group even had one song written and the band’s ranks have now added more star power, recruiting Faith No More frontman Mike Patton as their new singer.

There’s familiarity between Lombardo and Patton as they both worked together in Fantomas, who remain active but have not released a studio album since 2005’s Suspended Animation. The full Dead Cross lineup now boasts Lombardo (ex-Slayer, Suicidal Tendencies, Misfits), Patton, bassist Justin Pearson (The Locust, Retox, Head Wound City) and guitarist Michael Crain (Retox, Festival of Dead Deer).

Back in mid-September earlier this year, Pearson told the Everything Went Black podcast that Dead Cross singer Gabe Serbian had left the band after recording their yet-to-be disclosed full length debut and that they were in the process of re-recording vocals with “an established singer,” but did not reveal who this singer was at the time.

After the band’s formation, Lombardo explained Dead Cross to Noisey, stating, “It’s just straightforward brutal punk — metal-esque, but it’s definitely not metal. I think it definitely leans more towards the punk style, because I feel that the way things are in the world, a punk attitude is definitely necessary to help you along with the s–t that’s going on.” With true punk attitude, he continued, “There’s no time to sing, ‘We Are the World,’ or all this bulls–t, we’re all pissed right now, and there’s no better way to release anger than to be in a punk band and write punk music.”

Lombardo will also be sitting in as the drummer of the house band on Late Night With Seth Meyers this week, starting tonight (Dec. 12). The timing is of extra interest as Megadeth will be guesting on the program on Thursday (Dec. 15), representing thrash to the fullest extent.
