Dream Theater gave New York City fans a theatrical performance at the very elegant looking Beacon Theater last night (Oct. 12). Labelmates Trivium served as support, to say the least. In essence, the crowd got two massive, headlining bands in one explosive show.

Trivium rocked the house and had fans off their seats, fist pumping and jumping up and down in aisles in a venue with no general admission area. They performed several tracks from their newest album, ‘In Waves,’ including the title track ‘Built to Fall,’ ‘Black’ ‘Caustic Are the Ties that Bind’ and a few others. The only complaint about their set is that it was too short.

Dream Theater exploded onto the stage with ‘Bridges in the Sky.’ Frontman James LaBrie came out with his flowing black trench coat and commanded the stage with the crowd in the palm of his hands. Not to mention his vocals and energy were on point throughout the evening.

The band played a handful of tunes from their latest album ‘A Dramatic Turn of Events’ as diehard fans belted out ‘On the Backs of Angels,’ ‘Build Me Up, Break Me Down,’ ‘Breaking Illusions' and ‘Outcry,’ among others.

One of the highlights of the night was when new stickman Mike Mangini gave fans a thunderous drum solo as he sat behind a monstrous kit. His mind blowing solo had fans wondering exactly how many arms he really has.

Dream Theater’s tour with Trivium wraps up Oct. 27 in Grand Prairie Texas. For a full list of remaining dates, click here.
