Five Finger Death Punch drummer Jeremy Spencer has rocked thousands of fans and earned plenty of accolades over the years, but he’s now giving an inside look at the life that goes on that many fans may not see in his new autobiography, ‘Death Punch’d: Surviving Five Finger Death Punch’s Metal Mayhem.’

The book follows the highs and lows of living the rock ‘n’ roll lifestyle, with Spencer offering sobering candor while sharing his journey with addiction issues and recovery. The rocker also goes into great detail about the struggle to make it in the music industry with tales that both inspire and generate some laughs.

The drummer tells Revolver, who premiered the book trailer seen above, “The day I left treatment for alcohol and drug addiction, I decided to write my story. I was feeling raw and exposed and hoped just ‘getting it all out’ would be therapeutic. And it was.” Spencer adds that he never considered the fact until well into writing his story that his experiences might offer encouragement for people both pushing for their dreams and to those who are dealing with addiction issues.

Spencer continues, “At first I was apprehensive about the reaction I’d get from having the arrogance to think anyone would want to read about my life. However, that initial apprehension has been replaced by knowing that if my story can help even one person, whatever criticism I receive will pale in comparison. I’m not proud of many episodes in the book, but the person I was, under the influence, is not who I choose to be. A heartbeat away from death, I choose life.”

Alice Cooper states, “Every rock star struggling with addiction comes to the crossroads where he decides whether to live or die. It all comes down to that one decision … Jeremy’s book is one of the best rock ‘n’ roll, addiction and redemption stories since Nikki Sixx‘s ‘The Heroin Diaries.’ Jeremy, you’re still here. Welcome to the club!”

But the book is not all about his addiction battle. Spencer delves equally into the struggles of a musician trying to achieve his dream. Rob Halford offers, “Jeremy is in a position to tell a unique story: FFDP are a band young enough that they had to navigate the new music industry, yet they did so with an approach and work ethic that was purely old school. That story alone would make for a good read, and Jeremy covers it. But thankfully he goes further — he details how metal musicians are forged, and how metal bands either bond or break, and he tells us this in a matter-of-fact, unfiltered voice that is as raw and unashamed as his band’s music.”

Spencer will commit a percentage of his income from the book sales to support the Association for Addiction Professionals (NAADAC). ‘Death Punch’d: Surviving Five Finger Death Punch’s Metal Mayhem’ will be released by It Books on Sept. 2. A pre-order option is currently available at Amazon.
