Legendary artist and friend of the rock and metal world H.R. Giger has passed away at the age of 74. Along with providing special effects, sculptures and set designs for films such as the 'Alien' series and 'Poltergeist,' Giger worked closely with bands such as Korn, Danzig, Dead Kennedys, Celtic Frost, Carcass + many others.

Born Feb. 5, 1940, Giger lived a life filled with well-deserved accolades. Giger won an Academy Award for Best Achievement for Visual Effects as a part of the special effects team for 'Alien.' The Swiss art icon worked on future 'Alien' works, along with 'Poltergeist II,' 'Prometheus' and the hilarious cult film 'Killer Condom.'

Giger's work with rock and metal musicians stands side-by-side with his film work, perhaps most famously designing various custom mic stands for Korn frontman Jonathan Davis. H.R. Giger also created album art for brilliant records such as Carcass' 'Heartwork,' Celtic Frost's 'To Mega Therion,' 'Danzig III: How the Gods Kill,' Triptykon's 'Eparistera Daimones' + 'Melana Chasmata,' and most infamously, Dead Kennedys' 'Frankenchrist' poster insert which led to an obscenity trial against frontman Jello Biafra.

On top of Giger's contributions to rock and metal artwork, the Swiss icon also designed signature guitars and basses for Ibanez, showcasing his signature cyber-horror style.
