Jason Newsted vs. David Ellefson – Greatest Metal Bassist, Round 2

Jason Newsted vs. David Ellefson
Chuck Armstrong, Loudwire / Mary Oullette, SheWillShootYou.com

Oooh! We’ve already got two of the genres biggest names squaring off early on! Jason Newsted has been a key member of some major metal bands over the years while David Ellefson earned his stripes as Megadeth‘s most prominent bassist.

Jason Newsted earned a win in what was the closest matchup of the first round, defeating Metallica‘s Rob Trujillo by a margin of 50.5 to 49.5 percent! After ousting the man who replaced him in Metallica, he’s in for what is sure to be another close matchup. Will the ground he paved with Flotsam and Jetsam, Metallica, Voivod, and now his own band, Newsted, be enough for another win?

David Ellefson had considerably less trouble than his Round 2 competitor, defeating Atheist’s Roger Patterson rather easily in Round 1. Ellefson’s bass chops are not the only contribution he’s made during his tenure in Megadeth, serving as frontman Dave Mustaine‘s main collaborator.

Jason Newsted or David Ellefson? Vote for your favorite bassist in the poll below! Voting for this round closes on Sunday, Oct. 6 at 11:59PM ET. Fans can vote once per hour, so keep coming back to make sure that your favorite metal musician wins!
