Today, March 8, marks the 20th anniversary of the release of the seminal Nine Inch Nails album 'The Downward Spiral.' The 1994 release boasted a unique blend of industrial rock and electronica, redefining both the genres, along with lyrical content that explored the deepest depths of pain and suffering.

Following up Nine Inch Nails' debut album 'Pretty Hate Machine,' the band's sophomore effort entered the Billboard 200 chart at No. 2 and has since sold millions of copies. NIN mastermind Trent Reznor actually chose to record the album in the house where actress Sharon Tate was murdered by the Manson Family in 1969. In fact, Reznor lived in that house for 18 months.

'The Downward Spiral' features modern classics such as 'March of the Pigs,' 'Hurt' and 'Closer,' which may be one of the most explicit and provocative songs ever to be embraced by mainstream radio.
