Philip H. Anselmo & the Illegals + Warbeast Bring Metal ‘Domination’ to New York City
As the singer of one of the genre's greatest bands, Philip H. Anselmo's legendary status is well cemented in the world of heavy metal. But Anselmo is certainly not one to rest on his past success, as evident by the passion and force in which he performed on Friday night (Aug. 16) in New York City.
The one-time Pantera frontman is on the road in support of his new solo album, 'Walk Through Exits Only,' a collection of intense, no-nonsense metal tunes. With his backing band the Illegals, Anselmo took the stage to an uproar from the crowd at Gramercy Theater. Following a jam of the band Portal's 'Black Houses,' Anselmo & Co. tore through a bevy of tracks off his new disc, including 'Battalion of Zero,' 'Usurper's Bastard Rant,' the title track and the companion cuts 'Bedroom Destroyer' and 'Bedridden.'
Anselmo delivered a vintage metal performance, smashing his mic against his forehead until blood streamed down his face; posing classic Pantera style, with his arms folded and staring out at the crowd; and addressing the fans throughout the night with his deep, drawling voice. While his solo material was warmly received, of course it was a pair of Pantera tunes that sent the crowd into a frenzy. The one-two punch of the 'Cowboys From Hell' tracks 'Domination' and 'Primal Concrete Sledge' were the highlights of a very memorable night.
Prior to Anselmo's headlining set, his good friends Warbeast took the stage for some hard-hitting metal tunes. Singer Bruce Corbitt delivered powerful vocals during the set, while guitarist Scott Shelby is, for lack of a better word, a beast on his axe. Opening the night was the one-man metal show Author & Punisher, who manipulates a variety of unique instruments to create a full-band sound.
