Red Hot Chili Peppers Drummer Chad Smith Apologizes For Soccer Joke in Brazil
Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith may be known for his playful spirit and sense of humor but it seems that in Brazil, some things are not to be joked about. The drummer has been feeling the heat since having some fun with soccer fans at a recent appearance.
It all started when a fan threw a Flamengo club jersey on stage during Smith’s drum clinic. Smith waved the soccer jersey in the air receiving cheers from the crowd. He then proceeded to turn around and stick the jersey down his pants, pretending to wipe his behind with it before tossing the shirt.
His actions were met with immediate boos from the crowd and eventually even lead to some death threats against the drummer who was seemingly just having fun with the fans.
Smith has now issued a public apology for the incident, sharing the following message on his Facebook page: “I want to apologize for my inappropriate antics at the drum clinic. My joke about team rivalries went too far. Clube de Regatas do Flamengo fans…I’m sorry.”
His apology was met with a barrage of comments in support for the drummer who appears to be taking it all in stride.
Smith will join his bandmates in the Red Hot Chili Peppers for a show tonight (Nov. 9) in Rio de Janeiro.
