Rex Brown: Pantera Have Been ‘Close’ to Reuniting [Exclusive Video Interview]

Obviously, there will never be a true Pantera reunion, but it doesn’t stop the metal world from praying that Philip Anselmo, Rex Brown and Vinnie Paul would get together to perform again. During Rex Brown’s most recent visit to our studio, he spoke about how close the surviving Pantera members have come to reuniting.

With historic reunions by Guns N’ Roses and the Misfits shaking the rock world to its core, it seems like there’s truly no bad blood that can’t be reconciled. Pantera / Hellyeah drummer Vinnie Paul has claimed he’ll never speak to vocalist Philip Anselmo ever again, so getting in a rehearsal space seems very unlikely. Anselmo and Brown have remained close over the years, though, so those fences don’t need to be mended.

According to Rex, gigantic offers have been made to Pantera to stage a reunion, with the bassist estimating “ten times” the amount the Misfits made at their Riot Fest performances in 2016. When we asked how close Pantera has come to accepting the offers, Brown replied, “Close.”

“I’d love to get out there and play those song again,” Brown added. “If everybody else was willing to do it, get us all in a room and get that water underneath the bridge all settled and make some music again, but it would be different, we’d be missing something.”

While it will be impossible to ever replace the late, great Dimebag Darrell on guitar, one name that has popped up in recent years is Zakk Wylde.

“I’d get up there and do it for f—king nothing,” Rex concluded. As for Brown’s current work, fans have been getting behind his new solo cuts “Crossing Lines” and “Train Song.” Rex’s upcoming solo album, Smoke On This, due out July 28, will show an entirely new side of the veteran musician. Preorders are available at iTunes and PledgeMusic.
