Publishing titan and Playboy founder Hugh Hefner passed away Wednesday (Sept. 27) at his home, the Playboy Mansion, at the age of 91.

Hefner created a brand like no other, starting Playboy in 1953 after leaving his job at Children's Activities magazine. At the time, Hefner's magazine ruffled a lot of feathers in a very conservative America given that there were nude pictorials included. But even so, circulation of the men's magazine, which featured in depth articles along with the photo shoots of beautiful women, hit one million subscriptions by 1960 and was selling upwards of seven million during the 1970s.

With his empire growing, Hefner branched out with Playboy Clubs, resorts, casinos, his own television channel and production and, of course, the opening of the Playboy Mansion, which hosted many a legendary party over the years. Often welcoming celebs and musicians, the Playboy Mansion was the place to be seen for many years.

As you can expect, Hefner's death led many in the rock industry to speak out on the legendary icon's passing. See some of the social media comments on the life and death of Hugh Hefner below.
