Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan is known for, among other things, having strong opinions on a number of subjects. He recently commented on a meme that proposed he is Taylor Swift's father, and his response evolved into an existential rant where he essentially claimed he wasn't even himself.

Corgan has been answering a number of fan questions on Instagram over the last few days. Although the slides are no longer available to the public, Exclaim! is reporting that he said Smashing Pumpkins were initially offered the closing credits song slot in the first Shrek movie. As many people know, Smash Mouth's "All Star" was ultimately given the spot and the Shrek-Smash Mouth connection has now progressed into an ever-evolving meme.

When asked which song was going to be chosen from the Pumpkins' catalog, Corgan said it would've been "Untitled," which was the final song the band recorded and released before their breakup in 2000.

A Twitter user tweeted the story at Smash Mouth's account asking for their take on the matter. The band responded, "Actually we said no and Michael Austin from Dreamworks kept calling," they wrote. "That went on for over a month. We assume multiple bands we're [sic] asked. If it feeds Billy's ego to think they we're [sic] first let him think that. Def would have been a darker approach. @THE_EELS are on it & others."

After receiving negative responses from Pumpkins fans, Smash Mouth retracted their daggers.
