Twenty-seven years is an eternity for any marriage, much less a rock 'n' roll one! However, Sonic Youth tandem Kim Gordon, who plays bass and sings, and Thurston Moore, who plays guitar and sings, seemed to defy the odds and enjoy a happy, quiet marriage in the alt rock spotlight. Shockingly, the duo announced they are splitting up!

Gordon, 58, and Moore, 53, will end their marriage after nearly three decades of wedded bliss and one daughter, Coco, 17.

The split is complicated, since it means that the future of the beloved, noisy alt rock band is now uncertain. The band has a batch of tour dates planned in the coming months, but the status of some of those dates is now in question. A South American tour set for November will proceed as planned but beyond that? Well, we just don't know and neither do Sonic Youth.

The band's label Matador released a statement about the split, which read as follows: "Musicians Kim Gordon and Thurston Moore, married in 1984, are announcing they have separated. Sonic Youth, with both Kim and Thurston involved, will proceed with its South American tour dates in November. Plans beyond that tour are uncertain. The couple has requested respect for their personal privacy and does not wish to issue further comment."

We wish Gordon and Moore the best as they navigate the murky waters of the split.

Sonic Youth's most recent platter was 2009's 'The Eternal.'
