Absolutely shocking and tragic news, as Chris Cornell suddenly died last night (May 17) at the age of 52 following Soundgarden's performance at the Fox Theatre in Detroit.

A statement to CNN from his publicist reads, "His wife Vicky and family were shocked to learn of his sudden and unexpected passing, and they will be working closely with the medical examiner to determine the cause. They would like to thank his fans for their continuous love and loyalty and ask that their privacy be respected at this time."

Although unconfirmed, Detroit television stations, including WDIV Local 4 and ABC affiliate WXYZ, are reporting that Cornell's death appears to be a suicide, as the rocker was found in the bathroom of his room at the MGM Grand hotel after his wife had asked a friend to check on the singer.

Soundgarden were slated to headline the Rock on the Range festival in Columbus, Ohio, this weekend.

Loudwire is absolutely devastated by this sudden loss of a true rock legend. Our condolences go out to Cornell's family, friends and bandmates. This is a developing story, so check back for more details.
