The rock world was saddened over the weekend to hear the news that Deftones bassist Chi Cheng had passed away. The musician died after spending four years in either a coma or semi-conscious state as the result of a devastating 2008 car accident. After reactions and condolences from many in the rock community, the first official statement from Deftones themselves came today via a message from the band's guitarist Stephen Carpenter.

Deftones continue to receive plenty of acclaim for their 'Koi No Yokan' album, with the disc making many year-end Top 10 critics lists, including a No. 1 spot on Loudwire's 10 Best Rock Albums of 2012. But the success for the band is bittersweet as they've been doing it without the services of longtime bassist Chi Cheng, who has mostly been in a comatose state since his 2008 car accident.
Four years have passed since Deftones bassist Chi Cheng was involved in a car accident which left him in a coma. Having only been in a partially conscious state since Feb. 2012, Chi is now able to spend his life out of a hospital despite many return trips due to various infections. In a long post by Chi's mother, she shares the latest on Chi's recovery, including a close call concerning oxygen deprivation.
Ever since a November 2008 car accident, Deftones bassist Chi Cheng has mostly been in a coma. In the meantime, the band has continued to write and tour with replacement bassist Sergio Vega. Last night, though, Deftones came closer to having Chi back than they've been in nearly four years, as the band invited Chi's son Gabe onstage to perform with them in San Francisco.
Our hearts go out to Deftones bassist Chi Cheng and his family, as yet another bout of pneumonia is keeping the musician in the hospital. Back in June, Cheng, who has been in a three-plus-year coma, was supposed to be sent home after battling pneumonia but now remains hospitalized with another bout with the illness.
