Last year saw plenty of reunions and 2017 is already off on the right foot as Audioslave announced they’d be getting back together for a special performance. Prophets of Rage were set to headline the Anti-Inaugural Ball in Los Angeles last night (Jan. 20), making a surprising addition with Audioslave’s first performance in over a decade.

Guitarist Tom Morello, bassist Tim Commerford and drummer Brad Wilk all pulled double duty, first hitting the stage at the Teragram Ballroom with Chris Cornell as Audioslave before jumping into the rock / rap hybrid Prophets of Rage, playing classic Rage Against the Machine and Public Enemy material alongside Public Enemy’s Chuck D and Cypress Hill’s B-Real.

Footage of three songs from the set has surfaced, including the smash hit “Like a Stone” (video above) as well as “Cochise” and “Show Me How to Live” (both below), all cuts off Audioslave’s eponymous triple Platinum 2002 album.

Cornell was open to the possibility of an Audioslave reunion in 2015, stating in an interview, “I think it would be great. We did a lot of songs and with the benefit of not having done anything with those guys for so long, I can’t imagine what it would be. It would be a really amazing experience just to get back and work with the same guys again.”

We were certainly a prolific group of people,” the singer went on. “We wrote three whole albums in around five years, maybe less. And these were albums that were raw, and we had extra material, and we just never seemed to have trouble ever trying to agree on what would come out of the songs. They were great guys, and I really enjoyed the experience that I had with them, so yeah, I would always be open to doing something.”

It will be a busy year for Cornell with Soundgarden landing headlining spots on multiple festivals this spring and summer. Head to our 2017 Guide to Rock + Metal Festivals to find out where else you can catch the frontman in action.
